Sobo's Fluval Evo

Stopped at my LFS today to get some coral dip. Winded up getting the Brightwell Aquatics MediCoral dip. The guy there says he swears by this stuff.

So of course I also buy 2 more corals bc what's a trip to the LFS without an impulse buy?!? Picked up a nice size Hollywood Stunner chalice and a Ponapes birdnest.

I had to essentially frag the birdnest bc I didn't realize there was an abundance of bubble algae on the plug and part of the coral. I got rid of it all and wound up with 2 separate frags of birdnest. They look good tho. After I dipped them, some kind of worm came off the birdnest. Not sure what kind but I just tossed it. Here's a pic of the Stunner

I can't get a good pic of the birdnest right now. I'll try tomorrow.

I'm thinking of finally upgrading my return pump as the stock one is just ehh... I'm gonna go with the Sicce return pump but not sure which to get. They have a 1.0 model which is rated at 251gph or the 1.5 model which is 357gph.. now apparently these are controllable and if that's true then shouldn't I just go with the latter? I'm almost positive it'll fit into my chamber given it's only a few hairs bigger than the stock pump.

Finally got a good picture of the Ponape Birdnest or atleast that's what I thought it was... starting to second guess myself tho, any ideas??

Little update...

Corals are looking pretty nice as of right now. My tank is still a bit cloudy however. I did a 4g WC yesterday and in the process replaced the stock return pump with a Sicce Syncra 1.0 pump(251gph). I have it dialed at a lil more then halfway and wow what a difference this makes.

My only issue I'm having now is that the return is pumping so much water to my DT that the tank level is higher than I'd like it to be but I can't lower the ATO into my 3rd chamber any lower(too much of a clutter in there at the moment). I could turn down the pump a lil but it's a pain to get to. I'd have to completely remove the pump to dial it in and there's a powerhead magnet, ATO, heater and ATO return line all in the way lol

Just got home from vacation yesterday to a pretty decent looking tank minus the glass.. my Snails knocked a frag of birdnest off into the sand but the polyps are fully extended so it must be happy. My torch is still acting funny.. looks almost dead at night but then fully opens back up in the morning. Never had a torch do this. The chalice got knocked over as well but it still looks happy. Might make my way to the LFS tomorrow and purchase my first fish!!!

Finally received my BRS screen top. It came damaged but I was able to make due and complete the frame. I got 1/8" netting and I think it looks really good. The 10mm clips I bought are too big but they're not terrible. I might order the correct ones in the future but it's just cosmetic

How does everyone acclimate their fish? Not so much as the drip method, I got that part but actually moving the fish into the DT? I usually don't like to add any of the LFS water into my system. Do you pick em up by hand or net em?

I used to do a net but just recently I took two tub-o-ware that sit inside of each other. I then drilled many little holes in one of them. I then dump the bag with the fish/coral into this tub-o-ware. I then carry both tub (the one with holes inside the other without holes) to the tank. I then lift the one with holes up draining all the water in it. I then put this into my tank and slowly tilt it so the fish can swim out.

I found this to work well because in the net the flop around getting stuck in the net at times. This keeps them in water for longer and maybe (no data on this yet) less stressful.

That's not a bad idea... Although I don't think I have anything big enough to do so. I'd have to double check. I know you can net a lot of fish but with some it's not recommended at all. However I won't have fish that cannot be netted I don't believe.

The problem I mainly had with netting fish was trying to net them in the bucket. I felt (again no data to back it up) that it cause more stress for the fish. Also in my 54 I had tangs and they would get stuck on the net and I had one other fish get stuck on the net.

With my 36 I decided to try this method.

I take my bucket and I put the container inside the bucket (stack with the hole one inside the non-hole one). I then dump the fish into the container. I then can lift up the containers and carry it to my DT without the fish going nuts, flopping around what what not) I then left the container with the holes letting the water drain back into the other container. Once all the water is out I then slowly put the container (with the holes) in my DT which then fills with water. I then tip the container to the side allowing the fish to swim out on their own. I feel (again not data to back it up) its less stessful for the fish; granted I only done 4 fish this way (1 clown, 2 cards, and 1 anthis lol). Now I have lost most of my first but I don't think that was due to this method but my tank itself; I'm still working on getting it clear and level out.

How long should it take to acclimate a fish when the LFS water is 1.020 and mine is 1.027?? I feel like it's gonna take foreverrrrr

To tell you the truth and I don't suggest doing this unless YOU WANT to. I don't do dip acclimate on any of my fish, corals, or shrimps. I just float the bag to bring them to temp and then add them to my tank (after a dip for my corals)

Well I never tested the LFS water to see where their water at but *knock on wood* I never lost a fish that wasn't in the tank for at least a couple of days.

I never used to either but I'm tryna do everything the right way this time around lol the salinity is slowing going up so I'll give it a little more time and then add em in... pictures to come!!
