Eric Borneman

Eric Borneman is a Ph.D. candidate supported by an NSF fellowship in the Department of Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Houston. Eric’s primary research area is in the field of apoptosis and stress-related factors in coral disease. Eric received the "Aquarist of the Year" award by the Marine Aquarium Societies of North America in 2002 for contributions to the field of coral husbandry, and has written two books on the subject, including the acclaimed book, Aquarium Corals. Eric is also involved in aquarium trade sustainability issues, sexual and asexual coral culture for research, diseases and reproduction in captive corals, and is currently conducting coral disease research at the Texas Flower Garden Banks. Eric has contributed hundreds of articles to both the scientific and the international reefkeeping communities and has lectured worldwide on the subject of coral husbandry. He has been diving and photographing coral reefs around the world since 1978.

Charles Mazel

Dr. Charles Mazel’s love of night diving led to his curiosity about the fluorescence of underwater life early in the 1970’s. With stops and starts he has been building specialized underwater lights and photographic gear for more than 20 years. He has written numerous articles on fluorescence phenomena and had the privilege to lead a team that outfitted a manned research submersible to make the first-ever search for fluorescing marine life in the deep sea. For the last 10 years Charlie has been employed as a Principal Research Scientist at Physical Sciences Inc. in Andover, MA, but on the side he founded NightSea to make the joys of underwater fluorescence available to others. Originally the NightSea equipment mostly appealed to sport and science divers, but now the equipment is being enjoyed by reef aquarists and is used in biotechnology laboratories.

Charlie will give an illustrated talk about his experiences and discoveries searching for fluorescence underwater, and about current research on the nature and function of fluorescence in corals.  He will also show how fluorescence can give you a totally new view of your reef tank.

Dana Riddle

Dana Riddle has been a marine aquarist since 1964 and began reefkeeping in the late 1980’s.  After experimenting with every gizmo known to the hobby, Dana began a self-funded journey of investigation into the parameters necessary to maintain a thriving reef.  Today Dana’s small laboratory has over $100,000 worth of equipment and is just a few feet away from a real reef in Kailua Kona, Hawaii .

This presentation will examine some of the coral colors that we as hobbyists find so desirable. It’ll also look at some of the factors known to induce coloration and, just as importantly, some things that might cause corals to lose their colors.
