    INTRODUCTION -- WELCOME!!

Thank you for visiting my forum. I own and have operated a veterinary hospital and pet shop, primarily for birds, in Hillsborough, NJ (Central Jersey) since 1988. (I’m a Board-Certified Avian Specialist). I’ve been a marine aquarist for over 40 years. I worked in the first pet shop in N.J. to have saltwater fish and began my college career as a Marine Biology major. Although my marine biology professor discouraged me from continuing in this field, my love for the hobby remains, and, in 2007, I extended it to a section of my pet shop that I call Dr. Jim’s Reef Corner, primarily as result of the SEMINARS I have offered clients (and others) to share my knowledge of saltwater systems, corals and fish.

My veterinary hospital and pet shop are in the lowest level of my home. The reef section is small, with three reef tanks from which I sell corals and two large tanks from which I sell QUARANTINED and TREATED FISH. {See next thread}. Upstairs, in my home, I have a room full of quarantine tanks, my personal 500 gal reef tank with a SPS frag tank, and a bank of eight tanks where I am trying my hand at breeding fish! Being the only “worker” in my reef store, it is best to call before visiting to find a time that’s good for both of us, so I’m not occupied with a veterinary client when you arrive. (I often meet with aquarists after hours and on weekends.)

My veterinary hospital is my primary business and source of income; my reef store is just for fun, so I can keep my pricing low to help my fellow-aquarists in every way I can. I look forward to meeting you!

    Welcome Dr. Jim.
When things are easy a person doesn't really learn about himself; It's what a person does at the moment of his greatest struggle that shows him who he really is? Just migrate from SMF to Vulletin and you will find out what I mean.

    Hi Jim

I would definitely love to stop by your shop . Not only the interest in the Salt water hobby but i love Parrots. I had a Yellow Nape amazon for about five years. He(Max) was bilingual- english and spanish. He was tons of fun. cant wait to see those hyacinth macaws i saw on your site. I been thinking of getting an African grey or double sulfer crested cockatoo. Please advised hours/days one can stop by the shop. thanks

    Welcome Dr. Jim!

Just out of curiosity, what was the first pet shop to have salt water fish in NJ?

I started in the hobby in 1972 and there weren't many for sure!

Also a former bird keeper as well but a jealous yellow nape convinced my wife that I needed one less hobby.

    Pistol,

It is always best to call first to be sure I am available, or so I can set some time aside in my appointment book. Many times I meet aquarists after hours or weekends.

    My regular schedule:

    M: 9-6
    T & Th: 9-7
    W & Sat 9-1
    F: 9-2

...but for the next several weeks, I will close early on 2 (variable) days each week due to a night class I'm attending. Again, please call first: 908-369-7373

The hyacinths are in my aviary and I can't take anyone in there....(Number 1 rule of bird breeding). "Strangers" coming in may disturb the birds that we are trying to breed, or, there is always the risk of someone "tracking in" a virus if they have birds or have been around birds. But, I do have one of the breeders in my house at the moment due to a medical condition which I might be able to show you.

    Hi Blange,

The first pet shop was Tropiquarium. At the time, it was on Rt. 35 in Oakhurst. (You probably know that it has since moved down to the next town of Wanamassa).

Funny story: I was in high school at the time. This was my first "real job". I was real excited about it, a hard worker, never late, enthusiastic, etc. Minimum wage at the time was $1.85/hr. After a few months, I asked (politely) for a raise. The answer was: "Jim, your not worth another dime." Wow!!...my mouth dropped open....and I'll never forget that incident! ??? (Talk about a tough boss!)
