Did you know there are coral in the arctic? It is true. In the Aleutian Islands, corals were known to exist from trawling nets. But they were first observed on the ocean floor in 2001. Corals can grow in cold waters, but there is less diversity. They also grow much slower as the forms that grow in the cooler waters don’t have zooxanthellae. They don’t form reefs quickly either. Even more remarkably, they can live 1000 feet below the ocean surface.

There are corals in Norway. There are corals off North Carolina. There are corals off Great Britain. There are corals off Antarctica.
