I wasn't too concerned with buying a phosphate meter once I came to the realization that was the source of my problem. I have a 5 stage Spectrapure RO/DI for my make up water and with the other 2 tanks having absolutely no issues it must have been the dry rock I used. The algae became my test...
I use the API test kit for nitrates and Salifert for Silicates. I wanted to buy a test kit for phosphates but from what I read it is hard to find an inexpensive accurate one. Since it was fish only I ran 2 tbsp/10g of GFO and changed it out every 3-4 days since I figured it was (hopefully)...
One of my success stories during my 7 month long hair algae battle. I was able to pair up my Yasha gobies. If anyone is interested in doing the same, the male has a dark spot on his pelvic fin.
Thanks all!! The other crazy thing was I think there was some toxic algae mixed in with the gha. Every time I bought an urchin, or stocked with snails or a Yellow Tang they would be dead within days. But the other inhabitants that didn't eat algae were fine.
The only thing I tested for was nitrates and I eventually bought a silicate test kit because I just couldn't figure out the source of the brown diatoms with every water change. Silicates were 0 btw. I think the problem was it was dry rock that started to leach phosphates. The tank was set up...
Here are before and after shots of my 7 month battle with hair algae and red cyano.
March 1. This was probably the worst of it:
June 25:
How I did it- I started to run GFO, pulled as much as I could daily until my fingers were pruney and weekly 10% water changes.
Thanks! I initially was going to do a mixed reef, but then the thought of having to test and dose another tank swayed me against that idea. Except for the candycane, which will probably get moved, I'm making this a mostly softies tank.
Thanks! I just moved the remaining 4 ricordea from the 15 to the minibow last night. Even though some have not attached to rock yet, they were threatened to be buried by the pistol shrimp I just put in the 15. The flow in minibow is pretty low so they should attach soon.
I'll have to update...
How's your battle with the cyano going? Hopefully you've won the battle. :)
Here is my update. Once I removed most of the ricordea that I was waiting to attach to rubble, I was able to increase flow in that area. Voila!! Cyano gone! ;D
I'm sure this is not the cure all for everyone's cyano...
I have to buy more epoxy tomorrow and try to place them better. With the huge frogspawn taking up so much room trying to place all the frags on the sandbed was trying my patience. I wish my reef slanted back more to allow for more options. Fragging the frogspwan is on my to do list.
Here is my 2nd minibow. I entered this in a buildoff on another website for 2 reasons (1) To keep me focused on the build of the tank and (2) It will force me to post updates since you have to post at least once a month. Posting is not one of my strong points :P
I plan on making this a low...
Yeah, with a Tuxedo urchin you started playing "Predict what he'll attach next." For some reason one of my 2 anemone crabs died. Now one of his claws has made its way to the urchins back ;D
It's been a month since my last update. A couple of changes since the last photos were taken. I added a pair of Tune 6055's and changed out the Ushios for a pair of Phoenix 250w 14k bulbs. The Ushios were too yellow for my tastes.
Wasn't sure where to post this. I just wanted to say what a great reefer roadking05 is. Besides holding an item for me that I said I'd pick up Tuesday but didn't pick up until today, he hooked me up quite nicely with more frags than I was expecting to buy. I wouldn't think twice about buying...
