APTASIA, MOJAMO, PEST killer....Eric Borneman's recipe

I do sell Sodium Hydroxide for Kati Ani regeneration. However, the smallest quantity I sell is two pounds which is too much for your purpose. But, if you really get desperate, let me know.

    March meeting thanks!!!!!!

Thanks for a great party Rod. Sorry I had to leave early, but I am not feeling too bad from the cat today, so I left in time. I really liked your discus collection.

APTASIA, MOJAMO, PEST killer....Eric Borneman's recipe

A year or so I saw liquid sodium hydroxide sold as a drain cleaner in Home Depot.

    Water Station

Two comments..... For your storage container, I would look at simple Rubbermaid totes. I would also think about not using a water heater. If you are doing a 10% change or less, the temperature isn't critical. When you are doing a larger change, then throw in a heater for a couple hours.

    Kati/Ani De-Ionizer

    You are correct David.

    Kati/Ani De-Ionizer

Muriatic acid is very easy to find. Home Depot, Lowes, and any pool supply company stock it. The Lye or Sodium Hydroxide has been harder to find. I stock it in a food grade quality. I can also regenerate the Kati Ani for you, but it is not hard to do once you know how. Bruce

What does RO/DI and Kati Ani miss?

Both do not remove all silicates if the source water has high amounts. Both also have trouble when the municipal water uses chloramines.

    Kold Ster-il

I have one, but stopped using it shortly after starting. It does not remove any phosphates from the water which was a problem for me.

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Jim, I spend much less time on forums than I should. I basically went through them to make sure I didn't miss something important in preparing for MACNA. One of the few posts that I always stopped and read was yours. I will miss it.

    Kati Ani vs RO/DI

I do not have a website, but I can email out a flyer. If interested, PM me you email address. David's regeneration time of three hours seems high even if you are doing one completely and then the other. I do both in less than 1.5 hours. And you do not have to be there most of this time.

    Kati Ani vs RO/DI

I"ll add a little here.....The Kati Ani is much more popular in Europe where water waste is taboo. In the US, RO systems were often used in home water filtration, whereas DI was used in labs. To create pure water for reefs, people turned to what they were familiar with - RO. RO/DI vs KA DI both...

    DI resin regeneration

Separate resin beds are fairly easy to regenerate, but there are harsh chemicals involved (6:1 dilution of muriatic acid and diluted lye (sodium hydroxide). When you mix the output of each regeneration, they neutralize each other and are safe for disposal (down the drain).

    Happy Birthday MikeM & BruceK!!

Ahh a delayed thank you. We went up to see my daughter at State College for the weekend so I was MIA. That was my birthday present and we all enjoyed ourselves. Late happy birthday to my brother Mike.

    RO Water

I live by a good timer that I clip on my belt. I use only DI purification, not RO, which fills my 55 gallon container in 3 hours. Typical RO systems are much, much slower - so maybe the timer is not a good solution in that case.

    June 2009 Meeting Thank You!

Better late than never..... Thank you for hosting the party. Your tank shows newbies what years of trials and tribulations can produce. I also enjoyed your solar power tour that revealed the legendary 90 gallon tank.

    flow accelerators

I use much smaller (3/8") ones that work well. You do have to check the pressure and flow requirements against your pump. Especially for the larger ones like 3/4". The other issue for larger sizes is that the flow is strong for quite a distance from the nozzle.

    Kalk reactor

That is pretty impressive to build it that cheap. Eventually, show us some pictures and tell us how well it really functions.

    Impurities after RO/DI filtration?

Silicates are the one impurity that will get through an RO and DI. A good DI will stop some but not all of them. There is a regenerating resin specifically designed to take out silicates (and humic acids) that is run after DI. I have only sold these to commercial propagators. Unless someone has...
