Yes you can cycle the tank without lights. However depending on what you want to keep in the tank, the lighting requirements will differ. I suspect you might have read about this already but Metal Halides or T-5s would be suitable if you want to keep SPS corals but if you're only interested in...

You can put the macroalgae .. preferably chaetomorpha anywhere in the tank as long as there is flow and lighting. Keeping it in the display is not a good idea unless you want your whole tank to be covered in chaeto droppings! I made this mistake in my 10G instead of putting it in my HOB filter...

I know this might be a big claim to make but I think my shrimp might have died of old age. It was huge - about 3" and looked extremely healthy with its whiskers extending beyond 6" from the body and then suddenly it perished by unknown causes. Could my shrimp have died of old age? Jw.

I am no expert with SPS corals but I would say that they're trying to feed. A lot of LPS like frogspawn do that so I would guess the same would be with SPS.

O wow aquamedic. I always thought they only made lights, I never knew they made nano-tanks. Guess this is what college does to you haha How much did that cost you? Is it cheaper than other AIO systems like nano-cude etc.?

You can try the finnex 30G.. thats my dream nano - it has everything built in and is also available without the light so u can use your own. It would be my nano of choice for an AIO. If not AIO, then you should go 30G breeder - the one that is 30" x 18" x 12" - they are great depth and dimensions.
