Saint Thomas Mushrooms!
The St. Thomas mushroom is one of the forgotten gems of the Tropical Atlantic. At first glance, an aquarist might mistake it for a Rhodactis species but it is more closely related to other Carribean Discosoma species. This mushroom is most commonly found with a diameter of about 1.5 to 3 inches although larger individuals can reach 4 to 5 inches in diameter. The largest specimens are usually found in more shaded and or protected micro habitats of the reef. The surface of the oral disc is covered by warty or smooth bubble like vesicles which can be so numerous as to obscure the oral disc or widely spaced to give the oral disc a freckled appearance. Smaller specimens usually have densely spaced vessicles whereas larger individuals tend to have more spread out vessicles. The color of the vessicles can vary between shades of green, purple, orange and red, often with brightly colored tentacle bases and contrasting colors on the oral disc. These coralimorphs are typically found growing in small clusters of 4-8 polyps but they can occasionally form patches so dense that it is hard to distinguish individual polyps.Some shallow water specimens can appear so vividly metallic red as to appear like a displaced miniature version of the "Rose" bubble tip anemone, Entactmea quadricolor.
