DIY Nano-skimmer

Well, Trio inspired me to get off my arse and get moving on a skimmer build.
I found a few items around the hose in the aquarium junk box.
Skimmer being built for a IM Nuvo 10 with approximately 3" diameter clearance in the back chamber (though 2.5" is more realistic for fit).

I found a two plastic bottles, 2.5" diameter, with a .75" dia. opening in the top.

Cut the bottom off ONE of them.

And put a hole in the tops of BOTH of them.

Pushed through some standard air line through one of them.

Moved on to a standard .75" u-bend return.

Cut the barbs off.

And it slides perfectly into the .75" opening of the plastic bottle.

On to second plastic bottle. It slides snugly onto the other end of the U-bend.

Add a wood block air-stone.
IMG_3471_zpsh1cvp357.jpg

Then pull on plastic tubing until its tucked up inside the plastic bottle.

Hang on tank and connect to airpump.

One of the nice things about the design is that you can set the collection bottle on the tabletop and by moving the collection tube up and down in the collection bottle, you can adjust the level of the skimmer portion in the water.

Next morning, about 10-15ml of gunk...

So, test run went well. Will probably end up with modifications when fitting it to the IM tank - for example may remove the collection container and replace with a collection cup when the time comes.
Will keep thread updated with any changes and results.

I never thought of doing a collection container. Neat idea

What I have found so far is that I can switch from dry to wet skimming by adjusting the height of the tube in the chamber
