FESS UP !

Darn I thought I was bad.
I don't test DT often once a quarter.
I always have my hands in the tank.
Not bad ;D compared to you slackers.

I too always have my hands in the tank. But those damn mexican turbos just keep knocking stuff over. I blame them for my poor practices. On the plus side I usually wash my hands before putting them in the tank.

In response to this thread I pose an honest question.

If all these people do the things they do, is it possible/probable that "Good Tank Practices" go a little overboard?

usually have my hands in the tank or ignore it for a week or two except to feed.
Move corals around WAYYYY too much sometimes.
check salinity every blue moon or when i accidentally leave the hose on refilling any Evap.
Can't tell you the last time i checked ph or anything else
Dont measure my Alk or Calc when dosing just give the bottle a good squeeze
rarely clean the skimmer and half the time the full cup of goo falls into the water.
Use Well water (cold) after the water Conditioner
do 35gal water changes occasionally and pretty much add water + salt stir for a few mins then add.

edit... forget to change my 25micron filter sock most of the time and dont notice it till the 3 foot sock is almost spilling over the top ring.

I think when people talk about good tank practices they are playing the averages. For example, 90 out of 100 people who use tap water will have issues in the tank. Now 10 people are going to be just fine and their tank will be perfect, but for a new person to the hobby people err on the side of caution.

The other thing I see here is that people who have had their tanks setup for a while don't need to check parameters because they can just look at their tank and know what is going on. Again, a new person might not have the eye yet to see something wrong.

Absolutely correct.

Now, let's make things interesting. Of all the "lazy" folks who posted, how many years have you guys been in the saltwater (specifically reef) hobby.

I'll start with me: 10 years reef, 5 more years for FOWLR

I have been in the fish hobby for-
Reef - 3years
Marine fish only - 5 years
Fresh - 25 years +

I don't quarantine (closest i ever came was keeping my achilles in my fuge for a week)
I put my hands/arms in the tank.
I use a canister filter (carbon) that doesnt get maintained as much as it should.
I only test parameters when something goes wrong (except salinity & temp monitored digitally)
Skimmer doesnt get cleaned out often enough.
I dont replace clemi-pure & phosban often enough (reactors).
i have a couple rusty hose claps that i should have replaced quite a while ago.

What's a skimmer ;)
sump - you mean the thing in my basement
tap water - they like the taste
arms in tank
carbon in media bags
gfo in media bag

I didn't start using r/o till I realized my tank looked more like a putting green.

My lights are on way too long
I work nights and like to see my tank when I get home

What's a test kit? Lol

1. Temp acclimate only
2. Only check salinity on newly made water
3. Never test any parameters
4. Don't quarantine
5. Change water every 6 weeks no matter what.

I believe in Darwin-ism => Only the strong survive, otherwise they are more than likely eaten by someone.
