I believe the tank that was discussed here, the plywood was used as a support for the plexiglass (acrylic). No water touched the plywood. In effect, the plywood box was built and then lined with the plexiglass.

However, I do know of people who use plywood for the back, sides and bottom of their custom built tanks and they “paint” the plywood with an epoxy paint to seal up the wood.
