SPS Grow Out Winner
Figured I'd start a tank thread for My tank I'm trying to go SPS dominant. Tank has been up for about a year and a half. Just switched the tank over to SPS and changed the rock out 2 months ago. Gonna give ATI essentials (no water changes woo hoo) a try so I'll do my best to document my successes and issues. Here's the specs:
- 40 breeder with a 20 G sump
- SCA skimmer (possibly upgrading)
- dual returns
- ATI 24" T5 6 bulb with reefbrite XH led. Led runs at 60% from 9am to 9pm. T5 runs for 6.5 hours.
- jabeo pp4 and jabeo pp8 powerheads at around 50%
- ATO with kalkwasser.

Parameters have been pretty stable for some time:
Alk - 7.6 to 7.8 (Hanna ultra low range)
Calcium - 430 (salifert)
Magnesium - 1,280 (salifert)
Nitrate - 3 (salifert)
Phosphate - .03 (Hanna)
Temp- 77 to 78

Livestock - white Wyoming clown, black ocellaris clown, tomini tang, blue sapphire damsel, 2 mexican turbos, a couple blue legged hermits and some banded trochus. Here are some pics

Looks great! I'm not a huge SPS fan but I'm liking how everything looks and can't wait to see this system grow out

Note: isn't that ALK quite low at 7? Are you planning on increasing that or just keeping it stavle?

My alk is typically 7.7. The ATI essentials I'm going to run you need to maintain alk between 7 and 8. From what I've seen, most will run alk between 7.5 and 9.0 on SPS systems. It's done like that because most maintain lower nutrient levels. Running high alk with low nutrient levels can cause burnt tips. Some of the best SPS vendors out there keep their alk just around 8. Best thing to shoot for with SPS is stability. Swings, particularly in alk, can make your coral lose color or possibly kill them rather quick. Stability is key.

They grew from these frags. The blasto came from Alex @OiA and has probably 15 to 20 heads now. The atom bomb chalice came from Reef Raft and the pic below is on a 1" frag. The pic in the original post is on a 3" tile. I'm probably going to attempt to frag each of them soon;);)

This one came from you. It's interesting because I cut 2 frags about 2 months ago and the polyps on the frags are coming in with more of a greenish hue with a deeper purple/pinkish body. don't have pics of the frags though.

i would say just about a year between pics.

Not much to update. Received my ATI essentials but won't be starting it until I'm back from vacation. Picked this frag up of CB maleficent in an online sale about a month ago. It was a a really tinyvfrag but has already started to encrust. Also picked up a shroom box from zenreef. Pretty nice to hold your shrooms to propagate.
