Safe to run 2 Phosban Reactors??

I have been running 1 Phosban 150 Reactor for a while now. Would it be safe to run 2 of them with double the amount of Phosban??

I do not remember the stats of your system...Sps?, gallons, etc. I was running 3 at one time pushing 300 gallons oin the system. It is safe if warranted, but ramp it up slowly from what I hear you can strip the tank too quickly

If you run too much phosban it can affect your PH. What phosban are you running and how much? Have you looked at the BRS calculator to see how much you should be running?

Taz...I'm running a 180 Mixed Reef...but leaning heavily towards SPS. The system with sump has probably 180-200 gallons running through it.

Mnat...I'm running BRS' GFO and I use the amount from BRS' calculator about 2 1/2 cups.

The reason I am asking is that my phosphates are still continuously high and I seem to be running through that GFO in about 2 weeks or so. I'd really like to get my phosphates to near 0, but it just isn't happening. So I though maybe running 2 reactors with 2 cups of GFO each would help....not a good idea??

I've never heard of a GFO impact on pH. Have any references?

Thanks...

Steve, I'd suggest trying to incorporate more macro algae instead if possible.

George...unfortunately I don't have room in my sump for Macro.... :(

Bob...I've heard this as well, but I haven't found any real references.

how about turning the second one to a bio pellet reactor? just a thought

I already dose vodka.....

I was dosing vinegar and was still having a problem with my phosphate. I switched to bio pellet and 6 weeks later my phosphates are 0 and I have stopped using GFO

Bob, from The Man, Randy Holmes Farley:

“There are two ways that GFO can lower (or raise pH). Most folks see little to no effect. The primary way involves precipitation of CaCO3, and it take very little drop in carbonate to see a drop in pH, so the alkalinity part may go unnoticed. I saw that effect when added fine aragonite sand and the mechanism is essentially the same, and one can see the pH drop while not detecting an alkalinity drop easily. The pH drop is usually temporary but if the precipitation keeps on, it may become more lasting.

The other way simply has to do with the mix of ions present on the GFO surface. Some companies wash it and what pH they expose it to may help drive the pH in the water up or down a bot.

I discuss GFO and detail the first issue a lot here:

Iron Oxide Hydroxide (GFO) Phosphate Binders”

I had issues with my PO4 too. I beleive my rock was leaching it as the GFO would lower it. It eventually did go down, but it took switching out my GFO more regulary, I think it was every week. I don't see how it could hurt to use two reactors.

I went this route and starting using WM EcoBAK pellets along with GFO. After about 6 months I completely removed the GFO and just have the EcoBAK. Everytime I test my PO4, they read 0 using a Hanna meter. Plus my algae is all gone now. This might be worth considering. It really is easier than dosing.
