What makes you discouraged ?

There are many alarmist writings out there, offering generalizations and abstractions as support. You know them when you see them. For eg., I keep trigger tanks and have combined all different species for years with only one mishap with a small bursa - and on the occasions that fellow reefers see my tanks, some of there are outraged, based on the anecdotes they've read about the forbidden mixing of fish. I posted a photo of our very big titan trigger and good size Queen Trigger swimming together on reefcentral and got a bunch of replies about how that's disaster waiting to happen - meantime they sleep side by side every night.

I second much of what i have read. Currently cyno is my enemy. You rotten slimy mess! You will not win! Says the really tired guy who just got home and will do his cyno sucking in the morning cause he is beat. I did turkey baste all my corals clean tho...

My sandbed turns different colors(algaes I'm guessing) after a week or so. Gotta go in there and siphon up half my darn sandbed just to make it go away... Temporarily.. Can't stand it.

Actually reading this thread...

Makes me want to start selling before I start...

If this hobby wasn't so rewarding no one that has posted in this thread would still have a tank. The good definitely out weighs the bad. You'll see!

Reading that excerpt shouldn't discourage you. You'll always read people recommending "to go slow" with a reef tank. although most people don't what the cliché really means. Now you know why.

I have such a hard time siphoning the sand, and keeping the tube in the bucket at the same time.

I'd wager that a spring clip from HD or Lowes would do the trick well. They're usually metal, but you can find plastic ones too. Can't imagine you'd spend more than $5 on one.

Something like this:

Oops just read the khols sticker lol.

Alcohol, how do you get that to clip onto the bucket without it pinching the tube shut?
just clip it on the bucket and slide the hose through.
i just use a really big one and my siphon tube is 1/4 of an inch i think. i have a small tank and only siphon out 4g of water each week so i use small tubing to make sure i can clean everywhere. im pretty sure you can get a pack of large ones in a CVS or office supply store. and i didn't see that they are from kohls. kohls always marks up their stuff so they can create the perception of a sale in the consumer. knowing that, you can almost guarantee that there was some kind of discount on that $15.

Oh my gosh where can I get these ??? My hose is long enough I just always somehow manage to tip it out of the bucket because im stubborn and I dont want to get a stool..even though im 4"7 and eye level with my tank...

4"7 ...the bucket is taller than you...:)
