Let’s build a tank

Well got a lot of time on my hands so today I got started on the new 65 gallon tank with stand and canopy that Hass and generously given to me a few weeks ago. I decided to start with the cabinet underneath I took the doors off and I have sanded the back of one already I decided to start with the cabinet underneath I took the doors off and I have sanded the back of one already. I only really need to do the inside of the cabinet as the rest of it is in very nice shape just needs a little touch up and some cleaning,no big deal for a guy with OCD, Anyway I’m going to continue on the inside I plan on removing the very bottom and just replacing it it would be much easier and I would believe more sturdy that way as it looked like a lot of water damage inside from condensation plus everybody spills water when they’re doing any kind of maintenance or work to the sump. Well that’s it for right now I will post pictures as I go along and I will make updates as I make progression

I also got some nice live rock today and put it in 20gal of water 10gal I had from last week when I did a 100% WC on the tank I had copepod farm in, then got ten more from bay. I put in garbage can with aeration and a lid, I’m hoping it will cycle while I do build, gonna take a couple of months. The live rock I got is so porse and has lots of cut outs and caves one is huge least 10-15lbs ,I’ve had my eye on it for awhile
Take a look

today I started cleaning sump, took out all the baffles (they are nice three eighth thick with beveled edges) I’m gonna paint them black before putting them in or maybe tint em instead of paint (not sure yet). The sump is 30 gallons, I also have sump n tank soaking in water n vinager while I’m working on stand and canopy.
That’s allfor today

So I got the canopy almost done I did some sanding some cleaning and today I’m going to paint the inside of it with mildew and stain resistant paint which is also waterproof the kind that you would use in a bathroom and I will do the same to the interior of the cabinet That’s about it at the moment just taking it slow will post some pictures later

You are using rock from the Bay? Nice...

I've used water from the bay in my tank. salt is a little low in my lagoon
Bay water works good also I’ve used it in the past, wouldn’t use lagoon water it’s more of a brakish water plus very polluted I would not trust lagoon water

it's ok by like December. but I finally got my outboard running so I can go out and get some maybe. but worried about parasites though. I should find a cheap uv light

Highly recommend a UV light
Well enough talk about water back to my build,,today I finished the canopy I got it all shined up and looking at as nice as I possibly can without just rebuilding it over myself, I also put a primer coat on the inside of the cabinet doors and my next step is to start redoing the inside of the cabinet it has a lot of water damage and instead of trying to save the very bottom I just took it out and I’m going to put a brand new piece of plywood in there for the floor I have a lot of work ahead of me but I got a crap load of time on my hands

Geez I hate to paint, takes forever just to prep, I made a mess just opening the paint can, and no matter how hard I try I always wind up getting paint on places I don’t want it, but it’s done all I have to do is clean up a little put clear coat on it then rehang the doors Then start in sump

I’m trying I got plenty of time so I’m just going slow but my poor wife she just knows what’s coming and she’s already trying to stop it I told her wait too late,, It matches my bedroom furniture perfectly it’s gonna look awesome

boy do I have problem my doors to the cabinet came out so good that I decided to strip the whole cabinet now,,spent two hours last night sanding the varnish finish off of the canopy (which I had previously called done)but since I have change direction everything has to match,,cannot have darker doors with a light cabinet and canopy. Today I am going to stain the canopy first set it to the side to dry and then start sanding on the cabinet itself I will also have that stained by the end of the day ready for a nice finish coat of varnish tomorrow
I also picked up dark window tint for the baffles in my sump

I got some more done today I stained the canopy and I don’t like the way it came out so I’m going to lightly sand it again tomorrow and apply another coat of stain.I also sanded the cabinet base, the whole outside it is ready for stain,,,but my wife says I have to finish the dogs tonight,so I guess I’ll be doing the rest of my cabinet work tomorrow
Yes Dear I’ll do it-:::: uggh

So I’m finally done sanding and staining everything (so happy no more sanding),,also got one layer of clear coat done,,,,tomorrow I’ll do another clear coat then scrub the 30gal sump tank (it’s not that bad),, and tint the baffles for it and if have enough tint do three sides of tank (back n both sides)

All that’s left after that is the main tank to clean (65gal)
