I became fascinated by the underwater world as a teenager back in the 60's when I started SCUBA diving and worked at the first pet shop in NJ to have saltwater fish. I've been in the aquarium hobby ever since and for the past 25+ years have had a special interest in SPS corals. I started my college career as a Marine Biology major and although I became a veterinarian, I never lost interest in marine life and the hobby.
I received a Master’s degree in Animal Sciences/(Animal Nutrition) and then my DVM in 1981. In 1994 I became one of the first 40 veterinarians in the country to become a Board-Certified Avian Specialist. (There are presently only about 100 of us although there are thousands of vets working with pet birds). I had a 100% Avian Practice in NJ for 29 years (closed in 12/16 when I semi-retired). I had a small pet shop in my hospital with a section devoted to saltwater aquaria. I sold fish that I had quarantined AND treated for every possible parasite. I also gave seminars to my clients interested in getting into the hobby and built systems for some of them. As a veterinarian, I have always had a strong interest in fish and coral diseases. For 25+ years, my main interest has been with SPS corals. I have been a SPS vendor at shows, including with NJRC and Reefapalooza as well as other shows in NJ, Pa, NY, and Conn (under the name, “Dr. Jim’s Reef Corner.”)
After closing my hospital in 2016, I moved a few times and am now living in Jupiter, Florida (soon to move again, to Naples, Florida). Because of all my moving I was forced to sell my entire coral collection in 2018 but after being without it for a year I realized that I must start it up again, which I did in 2020. I miss being a vendor at shows and am anxious to get back into that again ......... not for the money but because I miss the camaraderie talking with fellow reefers.
OTHER INTERESTS:
-I've been a high school basketball official since 2008.
-In 2022, I became addicted to pickleball and play almost every morning for 2-3 hours down here in sunny Florida!
