i would run the refugium light opposite the display lighting. you don't need to light the refugium 24/7.
i would not have a foam pad in the sump at all. if your chaeto is breaking off and clogging it, something is wrong. maybe it's the 24/7 thing, but i don't have anything between the refugium...

i know someone who left a piece of sps on the center brace overnight and it lived. it was even blasted with the halides for a few hours during that period.
no matter how "immaculate" someone's tank is, it's a good practice to dip new arrivals.
i think it was the shock of the fresh water dip that did it. there is nothing wrong with your alk and that is a common reason for losing sps.
i agree with discontinuing the phyto. it's more harm than good...
these are very deep and are 5 sided complete half moons. they are not like the current contoured reflector that just has a small bump between each bulb. these are also much larger than the ati powermodule's reflectors as well. the downside is that the 8 lamp fixture is a full 24" wide.
