What Magnesium to Dose?

I need to increase my magnesium before starting all for reef again. There are so many options for magnesium supplements. What do I need to know? Which is the best to use?

If you're up to making your own, mix MAG Flakes (magnesium chloride) and Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) and dose that. Randy Holmes Farley talks about the recipe HERE.

I think the first thing one needs to better control (increase or decrease) magnesium, is a test kit that accurately reflects the correct ppm that one really has in their system. FWIW, RHF recommends not bothering with testing for it. (Anyone want the second version of the magnesium "Checker" test kit real cheap?)

HERE'S A REALLY DUMB ASIDE: If you (correctly) manage to discover that your Mg is way too high, how do you plan to lower it? The Ca in my system is a good 20 ppm too high, but how do I lower it when I'm dosing All-for-Reef, which relies on alkalinity to determine the appropriate daily dosage for A4R?
