im sure someone else will chime in if im wrong but a dsb needs to match the footprint of the volume of water passing over it. its like trying to fit a 10 apt unit into a tiny septic system. there isnt enough bacteria in it to break down the waste.

the pod piles work really well. i have one in the back corner of my tank from before i added a fuge. i do recommend glueing the rubble together for sure. the first 2 piles i tried ended up getting torn apart by my fish.

i added live to mine. just make sure you dont do too deep of a sandbed.id keep it under 2 1/2". the footprint in a fuge isnt big enough to handle denitrification. let the macro algeas handle that. if you are using cheato, i found it grows better and faster when it rolls like a tumble weed.
