I bought a used overflow kit and someone had glued pieces to the 90. I didn't want them so I got a new 90 from glass holes but it wasnt drilled with the tube so I had to add it.

After I added the tube into the 90 at the the bulkhead, the gurgling mostly went away. I'd like to try the hole in the tube since its underwater but still trying to figure that out with flexible PVC

That's funny. Our Superman Monti is the same way. You can't really see any blue, it's all red from the polyps. A very nice monti!

When I recently set up my new tank I left the skimmer off for the first 4 weeks or so. Figured a bit of extra goo in the tank would help it cycle faster.

On the other hand, 55g tanks are pretty cheap or easy to come by used. Maybe this is a good chance to start fresh with any ideas you had before? Maybe drilling for an overflow?
