    Do GBTA’s Get Big?

These guys are maybe one inch across while my RBTA is about 4 - 5 inches across. Why are they spitting while the red is happy and not splitting. By the way, Red was fed when the Greens were fed.

    Do GBTA’s Get Big?

I picked up a Green Bubble tip from a local NJRC member a couple months ago (one street away from me)…thanks Bill. Anyway, I feed the little bugger whenever I thought about it…maybe once a month or so. So about a week or two ago I thought it split…still relatively small, but now two small...

Does anyone skim part of the time?

I agree with adding a dedicated outlet for the tank...and have them make it a 20 amp breaker. mnat, if my code recollection is correct, NJ requires microwaves to have a dedicated breaker. Call your landlord and ask him if he/she would fix it.

    Bubble Algae Beast

Again, good advise! I’m nursing number two right now. One more and I’m cured…or something is cured…who cares. Now where did I leave that jar of olives? If it is but one spore, that is one spore too many! If you wish you may come over and count my spores. I’ll make the martinis while you are...

    Bubble Algae Beast

Now we are talking some useful advice. I’m not sure how this is going to get rid of my bulb algae problem, but maybe after a few martinis...who cares!

    Bubble Algae Beast

I had picked up bubble algae a couple months ago from frags I had picked up (no names mentioned), and was then very vigilant in plucking these emerald gems out of the tank every time I say them. About 2-3 weeks ago I thought I had them beat. Today I look in the tank and see this beast sticking...

    Heaters???

Having two Mag pumps, a 24 and a 9.5, and with the lights on, my heater does not come on.  But at night, when the lights are off, it does. We've had this discussion before, but grounding probes only protect you.  They actually could be the cause of killing off your fish.  By providing a...

    Happy Birthday Paul (RedFishBlueFish)

Thanks everyone for the well-wishes. I’ve reached that age where I’d be willing to trade the “happy” with pain-free Birthday. With the sports and running I do, rolling out of bed in the morning is agony, and with each passing year, it gets worse. I sound like a moose in heat with the grunts and...

    Hydrogen Peroxide dosing

Hydrogen peroxide is a very strong oxidizing agent. I’m assuming you are using the stuff you get at your local drug store…I think 3 percent. Unless you are directly applying this stuff to the subject algae, it is immediately consumed once added to the tank. In the pH 8.0 or so, hydrogen...

What type of Media do you use in your Mechanical Filter ?

My first choice is to get rid of the mechanical filter all together. If you do keep it, I’d get rid of the sponges. Unless you are cleaning them with get frequency, they just trap stuff. Let the biology in the tank/sump/refugium “eat” this stuff and get rid of it.

Off the Shelf LED Light Fixure Build

Mike, thanks for the additional info on this bulb. I went to check this out on-line. I found the following bulb listed at $49 (new lower price…originally at $59.98). Titled 12-Watt 5-LED PAR30 Reflector Bulb. Unfortunately they did not have any other specifications on this bulb. Even at the...

Need Advice – Adding more Clowns

Well I did something really dump. Instead of taking two of the clowns I had down in the sump, I decided to put a good sized mean-ass maroon clown in the tank. Everything was fine at first….the maroon saw the other clowns…no problem. The maroon then spied the RBTA, and that was the beginning of...

    Garlic Laced Nori

First I have to say that it appears that my algae eaters attack the plain Seoul Dry Algae when compared to the LFS algae, which they more or less just pick at. All five fish are vying for a bite into the algae…a fish frenzy. I actually took the shriveled up piece of garlic-painted algae and cut...

    Garlic Laced Nori

Well, back to the drawing board. Went to paint the algae and it curled up. Here’s a shot of the algae ready for painting, and the second, after the algae was painted. They devour the plain algae, so I guess I just stick with that.

    Help catching clown in rbta

If the RBTA isn’t one of these massive ones, feed the anemone and it will close up while it feeds, kicking out the clown. I just had to catch a maroon clown about two weeks ago, and what a pain. It wasn’t in the anemone, but I eventually had to take out half the rock on one side of the tank and...

    Mixing Salt

It’s been too many years since chemistry classes, but if I remember correctly we always add the solute (in this case salt) to the solvent (in this case water). I’m just not sure if it is an actual written lab procedure…but it is the way we would always do it. I would guess that part of the...
