Some skimmer are very picky when dosing. Can you adjust the skimmer height and see if that helps? I had a Bubble Mac and water level was where it should be and had this problem. So I raised the skimmer and it helped.

My file fish are the small ones. Larger ones I basted with lemon juice and they shrunk. Then the file fish had a nice meal.
