You can raise rotifers without having live phyto. They will ingest "dead" phyto all the same. There was a talk at MACNA by Randy Reed of Reed Mariculture who shared all this. What you mainly need is seed rotifer culture. Unfortunately mine crashed and now that my fish aren't pumping eggs out...
