    Tank automation ideas

Steamman is right. RO works by running tap water constantly over the filter membrane. I don't know the actual numbers, but just seeing the unit I have, I'd guesstimate that for every gallon of RO water, at least two gallons go down the drain. For a while I was running the waste line into an...

    fixing exposed wire on maxijet

You're playing with..............................electricity. For you to get it waterproof using totally non-conductive materials that will not swell or disintegrate in saltwater....bye, bye.

    Worm invasion

If they are feather dusters, not a problem. If it's aptasia, that's a problem. Do you have a picture or could you google feather dusters and aptasia and see if your "worms" look like either of these two?

Any advice for getting rid of a crab?

One way is to do it the same way they do it at the shore. Place a net in the tank and leave it for awhile...let the crab get use to it being there.  Then tie some tasty treat to a piece of string an go crabbin'.  Dangle that treat close to the net and wait....and wait...this is best done...

Welcome To NJRC! Take a minute to introduce yourself

Codfather, welcome! "I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse." Great screen name. You've come to the right place. Make sure you check out "Plans, Ideas & Reference Material for Starting a Reef Tank." You might also want to start a "Tale of the Tank" thread. Also, ask questions....we...

For what it's worth, I'm not getting it and I'm only registered on three sites...here, RC and Aquariacentral.

Jersey shore fish & invert collecting.

I don't know...they look a little small to me....the new regulation is 5 1/4 inches....I'll have to taste them to make sure...with butter, of course. ;D

    Skimmer is electrocuting the tank

Gogol, you are more than welcome to borrow my multimeter. Stop by and I'll show you how to simply use it. Biospira added to an established tank isn't going to do anything. You already have developed the bacteria to metabolize ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. I'm sure you just need to get rid or...

    Skimmer is electrocuting the tank

How bad is the voltage leak?  Can you feel the tingle when you put you hand in the tank?  If you can, measure the voltage by using a multimeter (VOM).  One probe in the water, the other to ground.  I use the little screw on the coverplate of an outlet. Voltage is not a problem until the curcuit...

    Toxic Salt??

It is used in water treatment plants to remove heavy metals. So if you search "water treatment" and either "iron oxide hydroxide" or "ferric oxide hydroxide," you should find a wealth of literature on the stuff.

    Sump without drilling

By siphoning directly, your outflow water rate MUST EQUAL your inflow water rate. If the outflow is greater than inflow, eventually the water level will drop below the siphon, the siphon will stop, but the return pump won't. It will continue to pump until you sump is empty...flood. If the inflow...

    Sump without drilling

Couple comments: 1. By running the siphon directly from the display to the sump, you are not controlling flow rate...it will siphon dependent on the physics of pipe diameter, friction, column height, blah, blah, blah. You need to put an overflow box on the back of the display tank. It will...

    Toxic Salt??

Chemistry 101: Phosban (i.e. GFO, GFH) also removes heavy metals. Assuming they are there in "high" concentration, they are removed by phosban (assuming you are running it).

    A Shocking Discovery

Could the tingle just be the salt in the wound. If you have a VOM multimeter, see if there is actual voltage. Stick one probe in the water while the other is grounded...set for AC volts.

    A Shocking Discovery

I agree with mike, you have a house voltage leakage problem. Never a proponent of the grounding probe. It only protects the tank owner, not the inhabitants. If you have the probe, it typically hides the voltage leakage problem....unless, like John, you're running the voltage out of the probe...

Hey, we just got back after taking a moseyed ride back and forth across that part of the state. Kerry and I had a good time. I was supprised that no other bodies showed up after the original post, showing so much interest. Anyway we're ready to do it again at some later date. I'd like to be...

    Few Questions....Not sure if serious

Water running through the few feet of copper in your house is not going to dump that much copper ions into your water. The water should be pretty much neutral pH and the flow too great. If you went on vacation for a year or two, I'd be a little concerned about the first few gallons out of the...
