I had a Euro-reef skimmer, I liked but it was little big from my sump. So I just changed over to the Sump Buddy 40. The thing is a skimming MONSTER. Well worth it, and they are located in Becon NY about 45mins north of NJ. Go with the new skimmers.
Well with the vortex its not that you keep the thing at high speeds or anything where it can sucked into it.

But it was all too real when hotel staff saw that one of the sharks from the famous resort aquarium had somehow jumped out of its tank and onto a nearby water slide -- where it managed to slide down into the pool.
It all went down before the pool opened Tuesday -- so nobody was in the water --...

Just keep in mind skimping on something in this hobby is like skimping on your wife or girlfriend. Sooner later it will cost you more, not to mention the pain or suffering you will recieve will have you crying, wishing you spent more.
Well I got home today to find out my bubble tip anemone ate a 3 inch pink anthea (not that the color matters) !!!!!!!!
Its tail of course was sticking out of the anemone. The fish was nearly as large as the anemone. The anemone looks healthy full of water and bloated with a partof the fish tail...
I agree, you need to monitor your parameter constaintly. Making sure your water is extremely clean and bringing your Nitrates to near nill also helps. But a skimmer will help, which is a must. Otherwise your nitrate will run away, then you will be doing alot of water changes constaintly.
