American Lobster (Homarus americanus)
American Lobsters are found from New Jersey to Labrador with Maine being most known for them. Lobsters used to be very numerous. They were so plentiful that they were used as fertilizer. Now they are harvested to be sustainable. In Main, a lobster has to be between 3.5 to 5” to keep. They are the heaviest crustaceans in the world and can weigh up to 40 pounds.
Lobsters, like most crustaceans, shed their outer skin to grow. They will even eat their own shells. They are vulnerable when the shell is still soft. And they are very hungry then as well. Females can only mate after they molt, so they store the sperm to fertilize their eggs when needed. Females carrying eggs have their tails notched to indicate they are breeding.

Lobsters can swim forward or backwards. When frightened, they curl their tail rapidly to scoot backwards to safety. Clawed lobsters hid in holes and crevasses. Spiny lobsters are found on rocky reefs. They tend to forage at night.
Lobsters have clear blood.
Lobsters can be yellow, blue or green. Blue lobsters are 1 in 2 million. The first lobster shown can be seen at Adventure Aquarium in Camden.
