After jumping back in with a 13 gal aio and falling back in love with reefing I resurrected a 30 gal hex and did my own aio- using my own rock along with live and a bare bottom- things were good at first- flow was hard to direct and lighting was also was a problem. But what made me finally decide to shut it down was the fish- most fish don't swim vertically, whether or not they are territorial they need their space and most swim horizontally. I could have kept the tank with a couple of clowns and maybe a bottom dweller and a topper ( blenny) but I wanted something more- It was just too frustrating for me- shut it down- bought a 40B- moved everything and am a very happy camper (reefer)
