I have all my intakes covered with sponge....

your can try other methods but i think the sponge works best for flow maximum proctection

Some powerhead you can add a filter to the bottom of the intake. This is basically a cage to add the filter pad in it. I keep the cage on the power head with out the filter all the time to keep anything and everything from getting sucked in.
