Lots of wasted water from the drain tube which I haven't hooked up under the sink to the drain. Is that water good for anything...clean water to wash my dishes? ;)

You'll likely waste 5g to every 1 of good water produced. That's fairly typical. Your filters might need some breaking in so I'd wait until the first ?? gallons have gone through it first. We were fairly uninformed when we started ours up so I'll let someone else give you advice there! Yes, you can use your waste water for watering plants outside, washing dishes, ?? Etc. Ours goes right into the drain which is good because then I don't see how much waste water is going down the tubes!
