I getting ready to start building my new hood. I'm going to use 175W MH on a 54g corner. I was wondering how you measure the light height. Is it from the bulb or from the bottom of the reflector/housing.

Welcome to NJRC.
You measure from the top of the water to the bulb. I like mine 8 to 12 inches away. Any closer, I get salt spray on the bulbs.

Good! I should be ok then the hood will be about 12" tall from the top edge of the tank and the water is about 1-2" below the edge.
