cant believe how much crap is in live rock

this is more of an observation post than anything. i have about 30 pounds of live rock that I am "cooking" in a rubbermaid container with 2 powerheads and a heater. Its been in there for a month now and my routine is that I change out 100% of the water every saturday and replace with fresh RODI saltwater. I also give the rock a good brushing to get some extra gunk off.

I did this because i inherited my friends reef setup because he had a horrible case of hair and bubble algae he couldnt get under control. My guess is that the rock didnt get cured enough in the first place and nutrients just kept soaking into the water column. Anyway its amazing how much dead algae is coming off the rocks every time i scrub and swish each piece every week. I am going to keep the rock cooking until the water is no longer brown and there is no more sediment at the bottom of the container.

Have any of you tried this process for curing or algae control? It seems to be working so far. I also hear that you should do this for your rock every few years to clean it up.

Once the water is clear you'll want to test it after a week/two weeks to see what your ammo/trite/trate numbers are. When they're all back down to zero and STAY at zero then it is cycled.
