Clown ID

Ok, I can never figure this out. Perc, Osc, blah blah blah.

Can someone tell me which clown this is?

Got him as a rescue from someone on Craigslist. "death in the family" "noone knows how to care for him" etc. etc. etc. Nursed him back to health. He was in pretty bad shape when I got him. Salinity of the water he was in was 1.040+, and the water was murky and brown. Don't know how long he was in there, but he is doing great in my little 10 gallon now. Eats like a pig anything I give him. Anyway, if someone can tell me which one this is, would appreciate it. Thinking about getting him a "buddy" once he finds his way into one of the larger tanks.

(BTW, the white spots are in the water column because my camera phone sucks, he is ick free so far after about 3 weeks in "quarantine")

looks like a false perc - my true percs have really thick black bars around the white lines.

neat pick up though - looks like the bars haven't grown in as of yet.

Thanks hawk. Been doing some research while waiting for opinions.

It's difficult to tell in the pic (camera phones suck) but zooming in, it appears to have 10 dorsal spikes vs the 11 the true percula has. This seems to be the only actual physical attribute difference. The rest, like thicker vs thinner black bars, and taller vs shorter dorsals seems to be too subjective to actually be a determinant.

With that, I'm leaning towards the false as well.

But, we shall see as he grows and matures a bit. He's a very "interested" little fellow compared to other clowns I've had or have. If I walk back and forth in front of the tank, he comes darting out from wherever he is and follows me around. Probably waiting for food, but it's cool just the same. He will also eat right out of my fingers, and doesn't seem to be the least bit afraid of my hands in the tank. He follows my fingers and hands around the tank, and just "watches" whatever I'm doing. (still waiting for the little bugger to bite me though, it's only a matter of time before he confuses me with food! LOL!)

definitely occ clown or false perc. you can count the spines on the dorsal fin, occ have 6 percs have 5.

plus the area around the eye on occ are orange where percs arent

That is a ORA Teardrop Ocellaris Clownfish

Identification:The Teardrop Clownfish can be distinquished from other Amphiprion ocellaris by the 1/2 white stripe on their side that resembles a teardrop, rather than a full stripe

Cool. Thanks Boomer. The underdeveloped bars were the only thing that still had me scratching my head. THought maybe he was just "different". LOL!

Cool. Thanks Boomer. That's definitely him!

Guess "free" (had to drive about an hour+, set up an emergency tank, etc) along with his strawberry dottyback buddy wasn't such a bad deal! :)
