cyano in an 8 months 210

i have a cyano problem....

my tank is about 8 months old now and it is growing everywhere. i've done some research and it seems that this is kind of normal. it also seems that the use of Chemi-Clean is pretty common. i was reading the instructions on MD and they say to place an air stone in the tank before and during treatment. i have a 210 gallon tank so is one airstone really going to do anything? should i hook up an air pump to a powerhead and have it blast air through out the tank? or is a small airstone sufficient? i have a SEIO M1500 that i could hook up an air pump to. would that be too much air if i ran that 24/7? if it is too much air then what about putting the air pump on a timer to go off every hour for 1 minute or something like that? i have 6 tangs, 4 blue/green chromis, a clownfish, inverts, anemone, and some corals. about a week ago i added three TLF Phosphate reactors, 1 with carbon two with phosban.

I have 6 72" VHO bulbs on my tank they are about 7 months old i have new bulbs ready to go in but i'm affraid that if i put them in the cyano will go crazy...is this true? cause it sounds like letting bulb replacement go too long can actually cause an outbreak of cyano?

what are you suggestions/thoughts?

Chris, common causes are high nutrients (which you're addressing), old lighting (something about the spectrum changing) and lack of sufficient flow. Chemi-pure is a good way to eliminate the cyano once the root causes have been addressed. Use of Chemi-pure before having eliminated the root will just result in it coming back at you. Siphoning it out at water change time is also supposed to be helpful.

I would think that an air pump and a powerhead in the tank would be good but I don't have first hand experience with using the product.

Good luck.

Ok so nutrients i'm addressing with the phosban, lighting i'll change tonight, and flow has been drastically increased. i just added two 1" sea swirls and a front sway bar...aka the steve68 method of waterflow for 210 gallon aquariums ;D.

so with that being said if i use chemi-clean now it will get rid of what i have and not come back? should i wait to use chemi-clean until after i've been running the phosban for a period of time? or is it safe to use it now?

Safe to use now. It MAY be a waste of money (meaning you'll have to do it again when things are back in line). Nothing to lose other than money!

I think I would wait on using the Chemi Clean or Chemi Pure... Problems like this usually go away with good husbandry skills. I think changing the flow and lights will help you out. The same thing happened to my 120 gallon. It was running for months and when I came back from my honeymoon it was totally covered in cyano. I did a few water changes, sucked out all the cyano and cranked up my Tunze a bit. It took about 2 weeks to totally eradicate it.

to address the nutients do min. 30% water changes and then use the chemi clean then the phosban. Change your bulbs one a week for six weeks or reduce your lighting duration if you change more than one. You don't want to stress the corals from too much light. Remember to make changes slowly so whatever you do don't all of these things in one day.
