Help with Standpipe/Bulkhead isssue

One of my standpipes will not sit tight in to the bulkhead. (of course I find this out after I fill the tank with water) When I turn on my return pump the pipe pops out of the bulkhead. I think that maybe the pipe from the bottom of the bulkhead to the sump may be to high into the bulkhead not allowing the standpipe to sit in tight???? Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on what to do??

Thanks

Re: Help with Satndpipe/Bulkhead isssue

Is this the feed water or drain water pipe?

Re: Help with Satndpipe/Bulkhead isssue

It is the drain which is all the more confussing to me why it pops out when the return pump goes on???

Ahh yes. That's exactly what I thought (feed). Hmm. You're right. That's perplexing. Why would the drain pop out. Is the pipe the right size for the bulkhead? Does it feel snug when you push it into place? Are you getting it seated well when you're installing it? It should seat 1/4" at least when you put it in place. Is it a slip bulkhead or threaded?

Re: Help with Satndpipe/Bulkhead isssue

It is a slip and it is the bulkhead that came with the tank. (bought it used) The pipe does not want to go all the way down. I hope I don't have to change the bulkhead???

I'd try a new piece of pipe first. Maybe there's something (coraline, whatever) on that pipe preveting it from seating?

if it doesn't feel tight when you push it in you could try to wrap some teflon tape on the end. that should help make a tighter fit.

Thanks all for the advice last night I bought some 1" PVC a reducer and 1 1/4 PVC and connected it to the existing strainer, everything fits snug and I am up and running. I guess the orginal pipe was just too big... go figure??

Thanks
