LIGHTING THE REEF TANK WITH NATURAL LIGHT

Is there an instrument that tells you when your tank, being light by the sun has reached enough light for corals to sustain and grow? And also a way to control the amount of light in the summer vs winter months?

You can use a PAR meter to determine the amount of light being put into your tank. A few folks use solar tubes in their roof/ceiling to direct natural sunlight into their reef tanks. Then just supplement that with your choice of either T5's or halides for those cloudy days or just to add more light to the tank.

Thats what i was thinking just didnt know if it was different being its natural sunlight...Does anyone here run there tank like that or know of a web site that has someone using this method..

check reef central. i'll see if i can find the thread. i think apogee makes the meter you are looking for witch is PAR or you can use a LUX meter that is cheaper but you need to know the formula. i'm looking at doing this when i upgrade to a slightly bigger tank and build my garage.
