macro algaes and plants

is there anything besides mangroves that you can put in a reef tank that looks attractive and sucks up nitrates? Some guy on craigslist said he dives off of NY and posted some red plants that he found at about 35 feet. Any macro algae that you can put in your display that looks decent?

This one?

That is the one Greg, thanks for the picture.
To see how it looks in a display, check out the MNAT's 12g aquapod in the nano thread.

the reason chaeto is used in the refugium and not other macros is that it does the best job without releasing toxins during reproductive events.
those red macros aren't nearly as effective.
i would not put any macros in the display that utilize anchoring "roots". you'll be hard pressed to remove them completely, and they are sure to become a nuisance.

Like caulerpa. Don't put that in your display. Or your fuge if you can help it. Chaeto is a good macro for export. For display the red and there's another one (what's the macro called that sucks up Ca?)

halimeda. also hard to get rid of once its in your rocks.
pulled it out twice and keeps coming back.
My humble opinion is stick with mangroves and chato.

Thanks Dave. I wasn't aware that it plants itself as well. Sorry it keeps coming back!

There are some others like the shaving brush plant that grown in the sand that are attractive, turtle grass is another. They are supposed to be grazer resistant...but I found conchs ate the shaving brush plant.

Greg's tanks with the macro's are quite beautiful I wouldn't knock them.

many macros are nice looking. i'm not knocking them...i'm just stating the downsides.
btw- halimeda and shaving brush both use calcium if i'm not mistaken. IMO, anything that competes with the corals has got to go!

For the record - mangroves should not be compared with "macros". Mangroves are neat and cool but they should not be considered something that can pull nutrients out at the level of say cheato or caulpera.

Show off. ;D Beautiful as always, Bill!

Thanks Phyl, they're oldies. The bottom two are from the 75 before it moved to the 180. I don't have any shots of the 180 at it's peak halimeda population. I just did a major harvest. I'll get some new pix when it grows back.
