You must use a UV shield with the DE bulbs. This shield has to be removed and reinstalled every time you change the bulbs. We couldn't do that, given our installation. We went with SE so that we didn't need the shields on our pendants.

I've found that DE bulbs tend to run a lot hotter, possibly because manufactured fixtures for them often don't use fans. As pointed out they must be run with a UV blocking glass shield.

I think it's a little easier to get a good reflector around a DE bulb. On the other hand, you have to be extremely careful installing and removing the bulb. SE bulbs are easy to install and remove, since they just screw in.

Replacement bulbs seem to run about the same.

As I see it there are a few minor advantages and disadvantages either way, and no real reason to choose one over the other in manufactured fixtures. However, if it's going to be a DIY project, SE parts and bulbs would be a lot easier to work with.

The DE bulbs are suppose to be a little brighter and more efficient than the traditional screw ins. That's why i bought em
