Figured we would start a new thread for our new tank, and no we don't still have the 205, this is replacing the 205. Long story short there was a bubble in the silicon of the tank and it was just getting bigger, even after having it repaired, and we were not just going to wait for it to fail someday. The rimless fad looked pretty but man did a lot of those tanks fail. So after some deliberation and some planning with @reefco, we got a 180 tank and are going with the following:
Tank and Stand: Planet aquarium mega matrix 180 tank and stand, went with the black background. We found that having the 30 inches front to back with the 180 nice, but we realized we couldn't reach the back center so it really didn't help to much. We wanted to stay with roughly the same water volume, so we went with the 6 foot tank. Really impressed with the build of the tank and stand so far.
Lighting: TBD, we still have the 4 foot T5 fixture with reef brights hung on there right now which will work just fine for now but I don't think they are the solution we are going to use. We are thinking of putting a canopy on the tank and putting leds in there. Leaning towards the radions XR-30s but would like to hear some opinions on the matter. Also may put in 1-2 t5 bulbs for the heck of it.
Flow, we have 2 mp 40s going and one AI Nero, might add another Nero and go from there.
All the other equipment is the same, we were able to just plumb the tank right into the existing system, so big old reef octupus skimmer, calcium reactor, 80g frag tank, 120g, sump, 60g recirc tank and using the hydros to run some of the system.
We were able to transfer most of our fish and corals downstairs before we got rid of the old tank and put in the new tank. The fish did very well, the corals were a bit annoyed by the move, we also found a heater leaking current into the system a month ago which seems to have annoyed a lot of our corals. We had to toss a bunch of rock due to a nasty purple paly outbreak. We treated it like a zombie outbreak and just tossed any rock or anything that had them on there and were able to save a decent amount. We reaquascaped with some of the old rock, new sand, and some new rock we picked up at RAP. There is a mix of fake stuff and real stuff in there so we think we have a good mix.
To do list: Figure out the canopy and lighting, get another pump, stock the tank. Getting harder and harder to find fish in this area of the state.
Also special shout out to Brian and the team at Reefco for installing the tank and plumbing. They did an excellent job.
And yes pics will follow, just need to upload a few.
