Nano Skimming

Is it possible to get too big of a skimmer? I'm looking for a skimmer for my nano but I hear they are all terrible. I was thinking of going with an octopus bh100f...would this be overkill on a 16g?

Thanks

Chris

Well maybe it would be overkill....most of the nano's are pretty crummy....your idea of getting a octopus or some similar HOB skimmer is a good one. More then you need yes, actually works yes, usable when you upgrade yes ;D.

Doing diligent goodsized water changes would be another solution.

Thanks, I've heard good things about the octopus. I had to suffer with a Prizm when i use to be on a budget. The only thing it was good at was making lots of noise.

I have this same question. I'm down grading my mothers 125 gallon reef tank to a 40 gallon nano since she was diagnosed with cancer. I’m going to keep the 30 gallon sump and the MRC 2R skimmer.
I never felt you could over skim/ filter a tank, figures I’d see what others have to say.

Yes you can overskim, but that octopus wouldn't on a 16 imo. Something to be prepared for is it's length. The model you're looking at is not small at 13".
Here is a picture of the bh100f next to a remora...

Edit: and like JRWOHLER said... you don't need to run a skimmer. I only recently picked one up for my tank.

Yea I know its big...I've taken the same measurements about 100 times to make sure i have enough room.

I have a 5 inch clearance to the back wall and the length wont be a problem.

Is 5 inches enough?

You don't need a skimmer do your water changes the same time all the time once a week and you have no reason to get a skimmer. Old Image, but clean! crisp and clear
