Need help

i was setting up my first semi large tank 120. I filled the tank and checked the salinity- no problem. I read that it would be cheaper to seed my sand. So I added 30 lbs of live sand, 30 lbs of crushed coral and 100 lbs of playground sand Sakrete to the tank- i now have cement!!!!!!

If anyone has a cure or some extra live sand I would be greatly appreciative!

The mixture of the crushed coral with the fine sand has created a soupy cement like base- when i try to scoop it up it is like mud and stuck to the bottom of the tank.

I have heard that this happens. The finer sand fills in the voids of the larger crushed coral making a more solid base. What exactly is the playsand sakrete ??

I used play sand in a 120 (My buddy's tank) once and had alot of problems over time. Sand about 19 months. Corals never did really good. I chucked the sand and now to tank looks great.

marcorocks - sand special - $99 for 160lbs. I got mine last week.

Sakrete isn't the "play sand" you want. That sand is for mixing with cement to make mortar. It has a lot granite chips and stuff in it. The "play sand" you want is in the the garden section in a clear bag with a blue label. The sand is white or very light gray.

I used "Southdown" play sand from Home Depot, but they don't sell it under that name anymore. You want argonite sand from the carribean. I think it says it on the label in the fine print right next to "not for aquarium use" . LOL The Southdown said the same thing though. You can search here or RC for Southdown. There are a few threads that show the different labels HD uses for the sand so you know what to look for.
