I need to place an order for some salt. in the past I have always used the IO reef crystals but amazon has the purple box for $10 less. does anybody here use the purple box salt? does anybody know what the difference is between the 2? I don't want to cause an issue with my tanks so I want to be sure before I purchase

By purple box, do you mean just plain old Instant Ocean? If that is the case, the difference is no vitamins in Instant Ocean. And no one knows what these vitamins do! Also slightly less alk and calc. Instant Ocean is advertised as "Ocean water," and that's what it is. It's the salt I use. I originally use RC but didn't like the swings in Alk and Calc on a water change day.

I don't know if it's still going on, but OG2 had a salt sale for IO and RC. I know the bucket OR box of IO was 39.99. I picked up two boxes.

Edit to Add: Just looked the sale up HERE......and you just missed it. It ended on 3/20.

I switched back from reef crystals to reg. IO cause I always found that the ALk& Cal were very high and I dose so there was no need to pay the extra money..

gotcha, yes I was referring to the plain purple boxed instant ocean salt. amazon has it on sale for $40 for the 200gal box vs $50 for the reef crystals and I never used it before so I wanted to ask. now on that note mike/paul, I do not dose on my small tank so should this be something to consider if I make the switch? small tank meaning my 10gal.

also free shipping with prime

It will all depend on your corals and there consumption of alk&Cal as to weather or not to dose. If your levels stay consistent between water changes there is no need to dose.
