Question

I was wondering if its ok to put a filter sock on the bulkhead that feeds my external pump. Sorry if this is a stupid question there was one on my internal pump and im wondering.
 
No, It should be on the pipe that comes from you DT. I think it will just cause problems and it might get sucked by pump.

Why you want to have a filter sock there? micro bubbles?
 
first off thanks for answering my post. maybe i asked the question wrong. YES I have bubbles but i think its because of the baffle placement and the size of the sump. im having alot of issues and dont want to bore you with the whole story. the reason i asked about the sock/sponge was that with my pump full throttle it drains my sump. i no not to valve it down on the inlet side , but i think if i can install a filter sponge like the one that was on my internal pump it may not drain my sump. although i may have to valve down the output side which i hear is ok to do if you dont over do it. im sorry im very new and may be in over my head. i had an undersized internal pump and wanted to upgrade to something better.
 
make it simple if you could use a ball valve to slow down flow use it. Don't make this hobby complicated because you will discourage yourself. I personally think the sponge/sock is not going to do much, you will just be creating additional maintenance on your tank.

First off I would not attempt to meter a pump by using a filter sock.

Address the actual problem. It sounds like one of three things:

Pump too big.
Sump too small.
Feed from the display too slow.

If you want to live with what you have now, I would put a tee in the return line (coming from the pump), and run that back to your sump. Include a valve in that line to meter the return water. Not the best solution, but at least you’re not putting additional strain on the pump by restricting flow.
 
ok bear with me ... the line going into the tank from the pump gets the tee with the valve .... let the flow go full bore to the tank and the rest goes to the sump were the water returns from the tank.. correct ??? ;D

Here's something similar, but it is an in-sump pump. Note the tee comes off the return line and returns excess flow to the refugium on the right. Out of view is the valve at the end of that perpendicular line. Hope this clears it up:

sounds like a plan and a stop at home depot on my way home. I dont know if its the brand of overflow plumming that came with the tank but there is no type of grateing or screen of any sort on the overflows that bothers me and makes me feel like some thing could get in and ruin the pump. also there is nothing on the end of the bulkhead to stop things from getting in the pump. how do i keep stuff from getting in there and damageing my new pump?????

:) THANKS FOR EVERYONES HELP AND THANKS REDFISFBLUEFISH FOR THE TEE IDEA IT WORKS GREAT !!! I have some micro bubbles which I think are partially my new g4 , I hear they produce bubbles for the first few days. but I also think I may need a bigger sump, or more bubble traps, which was also suggested here on the forum , I need to research the correct sump size and baffle placement for a 180 gallon tank with a pump this size. But for now im up and running thanks to the help of you all its greatly appreciated. If anyone has some suggestions they are greatly appreciated.
