re: how to clean the old tank?

I am thinking about breaking up my big tank for a few days and cleaning it. what is the safe way to do it? i want to ged rid off any and all algeas that are around (buble here and there in and on overflow). is the time without water only way to kill it?

White vinegar...let it soak. The vinegar is a mild acid that will take care of all the deposits very nicely.

Vingar will do as stated above. After cleaning the tank with it, just rinse it thoroughly and your good. No need for drying. After the tank is done than you have your rocks. How will you clean them?

i got into possesion of a large amount of a dead live rock. i spent entire weekend aquascaping with the proper glue, acrylic sheets/rods etc building the arch, towers, back wall. i will re-cure the rock in a separate tank until ready, but once it is ready i would be interested in complete clean up of the tank since i notice small bubble algae on overflow. ideally speaking, I would prefer to accomplish clean up in one day so I would not put too much stress on corals and fish. other option would be storing my stock (very limited) with someone and cure the rock in the main tank. I just want to start correctly since the design is extremly nice.

I would leave the corals and fish in the tank for now and cure the rocks in a separate container. Its going to take a little bit of time and lots of water changes to cure the rocks. This can be done much easier in containers than in the tank. You don't want to drop one of the rocks and crack your tank. After the rocks are cured, remove the corals and fish and clean the tank with vinegar. Try to remove all the algae as you don't want any of it on/in your cured rocks. This should take at least one hour. Than put your livestock and rocks in the tank again.

final question, what about the old sand? i can clean it the tank completely, but not sure how to clean the sand from any algae potentialy hidden there? easier or safer to get a new sand? if new, which one to get it?
