ummm. euphylillia species...

is it safe for hammer coral and frogspawn to be close to one another. is it safe if they accidentally touch or will it start a war....

thx

Depending ... Some hammers/frogspawn are more powerful than others. They may not do anything when they touch or one maybe stronger and take the other out.

I know Blange3 had a couple frogs and hammers touching and he had no problem. But there is one hammer in his tank that is very aggresive and sends out very long sweepers to try and knock out anything it can reach.

I keep several different species of each in one section of my tank, all mingling together. We've had no issues with any of them misbehaving.

Phyl, is it true that Torch Coral are a little harder to keep next to other Euphylillia sp. since they are pretty aggresive and pack a powerful sting? I remember hearing that. Actually I think that's why Bill doesn't have them in his LPS tank.

We haven't kept any torch coral, so I'm not sure about the answer to that.

NY, It's OK to let frogs and hammers mingle. I've got to get around to taking some new pics to show just how close they can get. ;D

I moved a frog next to my killer hammer that Mike mentioned and no damage occurred even though it was touching the 6" sweepers that killer was sending out.

I have not added a torch to the tank because of their reputation of damaging their Euphyllia cousins. I've seen posts about this many times on RC, but have no first hand experience. A torch will be one of the first new additions to the 180 when the upgrade is complete.

my first coral purchase were a hammer and froggie...they came in a bucket from another ny reefer...and they were touching in my tank -no issues. Can't say for a torch as my husbandry skills with them is just pathetic. ::)

Have you read Bax's tale of the tank- he has a video of his huge frogspawn that sent out really long sweepers at night - so just a caution on where you position these two corals....(best to keep other species away).
