Water temperature

My tank temp is up to 85 degrees during this weather. Is that ok for the fish, inverts and corals? I don't expect the temp to rise any more but I am contemplating a chiller I just don't have the room for it underneath. What would be the ideal temp for my 120 H gallon system?

85 temp is not good for anything for long periods of time. normal healty water temp is between 75 to 79 . with that being said a temp swing back and forth from 75 at night and 79 during the day is very healthy for your coral and fish just as long as it a gradual temp increase and decrease. fans would be the best option for cooling down the tank if there is not enough room for a chiller.and i think most people would agree that a chiller is a huge expense and drain on power compared to fans. just my 2 pennys

i had the same problem today. my tank went up to 84 degrees. i use a canister filter and made a emergency chiller buy taking a huge poy or bucket whatever works for you and put some cold water in it and just kept putting fresh ice in it and i got my tank down to 79, it was a temporary fix till i could do something more permanent

I keep my mixed reef at 79-82 and never had a problem. I hate chillers and want to avoid them. A couple of fans will help more than you think

Thanks for the input. I just placed one 6 inch fan on the sump and if that does not do it then I will add a second one.

Fan will work best on the water surface. What kind of lights do you have?
Do you have a canopy?

A chiller puts the heat that it removes from the tank in the room. If you cannot remove the air warm air the chiller puts out to a remote location you are working twice as hard to keep cool. Remote locations are garage, basement, outside, or another room you would like to heat up.

Fans work by lowering temp by a couple degrees. Air conditioners in the room works. Turning lights down or running them at different times of the day when it isn't so hot help as well.

Removing power head and pumps from inside tanks will help. I am not saying to not move your water. There are other ways of doing so. External pumps and scwd to move water aroung. Soon summer will be over and we won't have to worry so much again until next year.

thanks scottyrock. it worked pretty well i got my water down a full 5 degrees and its seems to be staying a stable 78-79 degrees

it takes some time to take effect but it works great, u just need to keep adding fresh ice and stay on top of i until its back down to where u want it. then do something obviously more permanent
