Worried about my clown. What could be wrong?

My false perc seems to be losing his orange and getting really dark. On top of that his belly seems to be a little big and now his mouth is always open. Anyone know what can be wrong? I want to try to fix this asap. Thanks

Open mouth, if combined with rapid gill movement is usually a sign of bad water chemistry. Change of a color is the sign of stress that can be from any source, though the first to be manifested in this way would be change or inadequate environment and stress from other fish. Enlarged belly could be sign of some inner bacterial, virus or parasite infection.

First step would be to check all parameters. Amonia, nitrites and nitrates in particular, since, if I remember correctly, this is a new tank. Then your temp, pH and salinity.

Is the fish eating?

Yes he is eating and I checked the parameters yesterday and ammonia and nitrites are zero but nitrates are a little higher (maybe 10). Temperature is around 79-80 while the salinity is 1.024. I dont know what to do at this point because it can be so many things.

This can also be a sign of disease, look closely for ich, and especially velvet.

If this is a newly acquired fish, it may have been collected using cyanide or been OD'd on copper or other mdes.

Dont think its ich but ill look up those other things you suggested. Well i went to my LFS store and told him the symptoms. He recommended i try E.M. Erythromycin which is anti-bacterial medicine. We will see if that helps.

Just remember to apply this antibiotic outside your tank or your nitrogen cycle will be dead.

Yea the LFS told me that so i put him in a 2g hexagon tank i have. So far symptoms seem to be the same but we will see in a couple more days.

If i took the fish back to ocean gallery would they give me another one? My paramters are all good and there isnt any other fish in there to cause this.

That last comment about Ocean Gallery was extremely funny. I strongly doubt they will unless you have a very good association with them. Mine did that and looking closely at it I saw very thin filamnets hanging off. I used Stop Parasites by Chem Marin but still didn't make it.

So now his mouth seems perfectly fine. Cant really tell with the color right now but I will be putting him back in my tank in a day or two.

If at all possible try and hold off putting him back. I say this in case it has some type of illness. You don't want to spread it to the tank. It would be better to let it perish outside of your display tank.

If at all possible try and keep it out of the tank for at least 7 days and visually study the fish. If it has ich you'll notice what looks like salt sprinkled on the fish. It it has it you'll probably see if pretty well from day 5 to 7. If it has marine velvet or other really bad parasites you won't make it to day 5 (normally) as they are quick killers. You especially don't want the latter in your display. Velvet looks similar to ich but instead of looking like salt crystals it looks more like white powder or a white sheen on the fish.

Keep us posted,
Carlo

Thanks for the concern Carlo. He has been in the seperate tank now for around 6 days. At first his mouth stuck open and he was eating less. Now his mouth is closes and he is eating better. His color still isnt as bright as it should be but im hoping that will come back in time also.

It's probably safe to assume you haven't noticed any type of white spots on it correct? You're probably over that hurdle then.

You might be able to help out with the coloring by choosing the foods you are feeding it. Some are better then others for the fish coloring. I'm not saying this is an overnight cure or anything but it can help.

Have you been keeping a close eye on the water conditions of the tank? Being that it's only 2 gallon I'd assume so but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. Do you have anything in the tank like a piece of PVC pipe for it to hide/sleep in? Sometimes something as simple as this will releave stress in the fish (can affect color).

Of course he might just not like the "cramped quarters" and could be fine once you put it back in the main tank. I do think you made a wise decision to move it however. Better safe then sorry!

If you were to guess (unless you know) what day would you say he stopped "breathing hard" and what day would you say he started eating better?

Carlo

Well his color was getting darker in my main tank. I checked the parameters and even my LFS store did and they were fine. It may be the foods since im only feeding his omega one flakes. I really should have given him a tube to sleep in. I was changing out the water in the 2g daily so im sure the parameters were fine. I would say the 3rd or 4th day he started eating better/being more active. No white spots either.

It sounds like things are looking good for him.

When were you thinking of putting him back in the main tank?
Carlo

Hes swimming all over the place. Think hes glad to be back in a bigger tank. Now i need to work on his color coming back somehow.

Just wanted to update this thread. I still dont like the color of my clown. I got another clown and hope his color will stay the same. I also noticed it seems like the darker colored one has a big belly.
