Hurricane Irene

I live on Long Island and we just drove around and here is my block. We live in an area called the Oaks and this is why.
I know the South Shore got flooded and many people have a lot of damage.
About a third of the streets are blocked with down, still alive wires and trees.
This is the sight al over my neighborhood.
Thank God that of the dozen or so trees down around my block, none of them fell on a house.

I'm in East Hanover....we had a few downed trees and most of the town, including myself have been without power since about 6:30am. Couldn't get the generator started until around 11. Damn thing wouldn't turn over....found that the idle screw got closed somehow.

Now the town is almost unreachable because it has rivers on all sides and everything is flooding out. Going to be a long couple days!

Here in Hamilton, the power blinked a few times but never went out.
I've counted 1 downed tree but haven't went further then a block or so.

We lost power last night and then the new natural gas generator tripped ... not so happy ...but our electrician/installer, great guy, came out and got it running plus came back to my neighbor to get his running. Still on generator at this point. Have kept the lights off to keep the load down but otherwise running well. Hope everyone is OK.

I was. Found a 9.99 battery backup this morning to get the fish some H2O, hope I have not lost any. Figures the cheap 9.99 AZOO backup works and the 5 grand generator stalled out.

Redfishbluefish, yes that is a fire from a downed power line, my entire village looks like that.
I didn't lose power so I lent my generator to a friend.
I just went to my boat which is about 5 miles away and there are only a handful of homes here with power.

They pulled my boat out of the water just before the storm. It will go back in on tuesday.

Lost power about ten times but never for more than a few minutes. Phones, TV, and internet just came back. My basement sump pump was pumping out ten gallons a minute last night.

Stayed at my mothers. Came back to my place & the power was out.. came back on about 1hr into being here. While we put our clothes in the drier, we noticed the gas wasn't working. Supposedly, they shut down the complexes gas because of flooded basements. Good thing it isn't winter!

My power was out for over 13 hours. My battery backup died for one of my power heads. It ran it for 9 hours and it stop.
I lost two of my fish My 20" Vlamingii Tang that I had for 10 years and a Flame Angelfish that I had for 7 years.
Very Sad about it.
I will be buying a Generator very soon.

If any of you want I have the name of my electrician...he does mostly generators. Mine is running great now. He is heck of a guy, came out first thing this morning and then my neighbor called him and he drove back over to help him out. Obviously this is for natural gas or propane tank generators...though he was helping my neighbor with his portable one.

Daniel, sorry to hear about your losses. I hate loosing fish…it stinks!

With all the stories I’ve hear about people buying generators at Home Depot with Irene, and HD shipping in additional units, with people lined up to buy them, I’m thinking a lot of this units will end up being returned this week. What I’m going to do is visit my local HD maybe on Tuesday or Wednesday and see if they have any of these returned generators at a good price. Might be a good time to buy.
