Upflow Algae Scrubber

I stumbled upon this neat little algae scrubber, Hang-On-Glass (HOG) Upflow Algae Scrubber (UAS).

I've been reading about Algae Scrubbers for a while now and I've always been tempted to add one to my tank but the limited space I have wont let me allow it. I am currently battle cyano and this thing could definitely help me in that battle.

Does anyone have any experience with this product or algae scrubbers in general? I am very tempted to purchase one of these.

Thanks for the link! whoa, people really use these things to an extent. I thought these were just a good supplemental filter. Seems people use Algae Scrubbers as their main filtration.

That's where I got my info for my ATS. I don't know how I feel about going skimmerless though..

yeah, I don't like the idea of going full blown skimmerless either lol but damn, it seems like these things put in work. Now, I just need to find a way to incorporate it in my already cluttered stand! haha

I really like the idea of naturally lowering NO3/PO4 in the system, I mean I do that already through a refugium but not as efficiently as an algae scrubber would.

How long have you been using yours and how are the parameters in your water in regards to no3/po4?

The scrubber doesn't take up much room at all. I'll get a couple pics up when I get home. The lighting takes up the most space. Mine has only been up a little longer than two months. I harvest a decent amount of algae weekly. My NO3 went from 25ppm to around 5ppm(Salifert). I don't test for PO4, but I don't have any nuisance algae in my DT. So far, I'm happy with it.

This is what my sump looks like.

I have an MJ1200 I'm using to power it. I was using the pump for my carbon and gfo. I ended up stopping gfo and buying an mj600 to run the carbon. In hindsight the mj1200 is too much for my design, I have the ball valve more than half closed on the scrubber.

Not sure how good this pic will show up but this is about four days growth.

Now, I'm not pushing you to try the scrubber, but I'm happy with the experiment so far.

looks simple enough! thanks for sharing those pictures.

do you experience extensive salt creep or the water flow through the screen isn't causing a lot of turbulence?
