I agree, not sure if putting a RBTA in a 55 gallon tank is a good idea. I personally never had luck with them as they would wonder around the tank and would eventually get stuck in my power heads.
maybe you could get a couple of those hand warmers and put them next to the container with the fish. I gotta imagine it gets very cold at 30,000 feet where they store the luggage and you would want something to keep the water warm.
I would think drilling a tank while not empty woule be very risky. I use a SOS overflow that comes with the tidepool II and never had any issues with overflowing. I use a prefilter so that nothing could get stuck in the u-tube.

Got mine from Filter direct on ebay and for the price, it is a good unit. There are some people on other sites that do not recommend these uniits, but I never had any issues with them. TDS was always at or near 0.
