Here's something for you to try, mix up some fresh batch of saltwater like you normally would, then take a clear glass fill it with the water and see if you see the same stuff floating in the glass.

yes there is Atlantic cold water corals, there is even a few people who keep cold water Atlantic tanks, but the water has to be kept no warmer than 55 degrees. And there is even colorfull corals and anemones. Do a search on MR and Boston's site, there's a couple of guy's on there that keep them.

Then honestly stay away from acro's, all require calcium, Alk & mag to be within the proper ranges and stable, some are easier to keep than others and are more forgiving but if you don't want to test for and keep the above mentioned in proper ranges then stick with softies. Sorry if it sounds...
